The Museum of Contemporary Art of Alicante (MACA) is located in the oldest civil building preserved in the city, the House of la Asegurada. The building is of Barroque style, a style dated back to 1685 and is found next to the Basilica of Santa María. It was initially constructed as a granary and also served as a school of comerce until it became a museum. Its rooms house one of the most important collections of contemporary art of the twentieth century in Spain, mainly composed of works donated by Eusebio Sempere. It also has works by Chillida, Picasso, Dalí and Miró, among others.
